Job Description 

Overview: 

The Construction Coordinator will plan, implement, and oversee construction efforts at specific work sites.  In addition, they will determine and oversee the work of the volunteer teams at those work sites. They will: 

  • Work within the guidelines and directives of the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church. 

  • Assure that the goals of the recovery program are implemented and completed. 

  • Be a person who will work diligently, on behalf of persons affected by disaster. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Construction Coordinator will report to the Associate Director for UMCOR & UMVIM for the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church.  The Construction Manager will work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator and incoming volunteer teams to ensure a safe and efficient approach to meeting the needs of both clients and volunteers. They will provide direct supervision to volunteer teams doing construction work. 

The Construction Coordinator will work directly with disaster case managers to assist in client home assessments, including construction estimates, and assist with delivery and handling of materials related to the reconstruction process for the client.  This person will also ensure that all funds relative to the client recovery process are expended in a fiscally responsible manner, within the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church guidelines. 

Responsibilities of the Construction Coordinator include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Establish & maintain high staff morale, model sound leadership and teamwork. 

  • Be an advocate for survivors and facilitate availability of services and materials. 

  • Work with disaster case managers in scheduling assessments of home sites. 

  • Provide documentation of home assessment, recommendations, cost estimates, etc. 

  • Work with disaster case managers and volunteer coordinator to schedule work projects. 

  • Meet with local vendors to establish relationships. 

  • Schedule delivery of needed materials and labor requests. 

  • Outline suitable work projects and provide tools for incoming teams. 

  • Ensure coordinated supply of materials, equipment, tools, volunteers, and contractors/vendors required for project completion, working with the Associate Director for UMCOR & UMVIM for the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church, and other members of Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church, as needed. 

  • Supervise volunteer work teams and ensure work is appropriate, adequate, and timely. 

  • Trouble-shoot and identify construction problems; offer timely and safe solutions. 

  • Ensure project proceeds in a timely manner. 

  • Manage tool and materials inventory for each project.  Ensure unused materials are accounted for and reported to the Materials Manager.  Appropriately report and repair or replace any tools necessary. 

  • Complete necessary reports and meet at least weekly with Case Managers and Volunteer Coordinator to discuss construction progress. 

Skills and Knowledge: 

The Construction Coordinator will be required to have: 

  • A positive attitude and willingness to equip and encourage co-workers and volunteers. 

  • Excellent communications skills. 

  • Established credibility and integrity. 

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in general construction with excellent hands-on construction skills. 

  • Familiarity with International Building Code, local building codes and compliance issues. 

  • Experience in construction estimation. 

  • Knowledge of safe use of tools/equipment. 

  • Experience in supervising construction projects. 

  • A working knowledge of standard office machines and computer operations i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. 

  • Ability to train unskilled volunteers the skills needed to complete assigned tasks. 

  • Excellent people skills – especially patience and understanding of volunteer capabilities. 

  • The ability to set priorities and exercise flexibility where necessary. 

  • A willingness to accept other job responsibilities as needed. 

Requirements: 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle to be able to drive to and within the service area as needed to fulfill the requirements of the position. 

  • Must be willing to stay overnight in service area. 

  • Constant interaction with internal and external third parties for the purpose of collecting and distributing information. 

  • Spends over 50% of walking and standing, the reminder of time includes sitting. 

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. or more and climb stairs. 

  • Must be able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and humidity.
