General Conference 2024 | Postponed General Conference 2020

Welcome to your headquarters for General Conference information and updates.

General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church, which meets once every four years. The conference can revise church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs.

General Conference will meet April 23-May 3, 2024, at the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina. The General Conference theme is “… and know that I am God” from Psalm 46:10. The entire verse (NRSV) reads: “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations. I am exalted in the earth.”

The 2020 General Conference was set to happen in Minneapolis, Minnesota, until the pandemic made it necessary to postpone the quadrennial legislative event until 2024. At the upcoming conference, the Commission on the General Conference will follow appropriate protocols related to COVID-19 to safeguard attendees’ health.

Delegates from Africa, Europe, Asia and the U.S. will attend the 11-day gathering, which could attract as many as 7,500 people. Some 862 delegates, elected from around the world, will gather to set policy and direction for the church, as well as handle other important business.

Worship and Prayer Resources

We strongly encourage you to utilize and share these resources so we may pray with a unity of spirit for this pivotal time. Click here to read the Prayers for the General Conference from the The Mississippi Conference Prayer Service.

As part of our ongoing “Pray Mississippi” movement, Bishop Sharma D. Lewis has asked all of us to lift General Conference and our beloved United Methodist Church in prayer. To help encourage and facilitate this good work, we are a offering daily prayer plan for the Mississippi Conference. Each day we will focus on a General church person or group of people, a part of the legislation or logistics, a Mississippi Conference clergy delegate and a Mississippi Conference lay delegate. The daily plan can be found here and will also be posted on social media as well as sent out in any eblasts that are sent out during General Conference.
